What comes out
Most tubs in 1990s and 2000s Nampa houses are one-piece or three-piece fiberglass units with a curtain rod. We cut the unit out, open the wall to the studs and check the subfloor under the old tub, which is where slow leaks tend to show up. Because the wall comes open to the framing, the City of Nampa's residential FAQ says a permit is required.

A standard tub alcove is about five feet wide, which makes a good shower. We move the valve to a comfortable height, add a handheld on a slide bar if you want one, frame a niche between the studs, waterproof the walls and floor, and tile. A low curb or a curbless entry both work. A sliding or hinged glass door closes off the opening.

If this is the only tub in the house and you have small children, or think you'll sell in a few years, it can be worth keeping a tub somewhere. We'll talk through which bathroom should keep it.
